SUNRISE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

2007

  • Endorsed and provided comments to the Washoe County Board of Commissioners on the Sustainable Design and Assessment Team (SDAT) report for Northern Nevada.
  • Sponsored and participated in the 2007 Smart Living Expo Lecture Series.
  • Sponsored and participated in 1st Annual Sustainable Living & Renewable Energy Roundup.
  • Participated in 3rd annual Smart Living Expo. This year’s event was held as part of the Lockett & Sullivan Fall Home Show in Reno.
  • Produced five newsletters. Distributed these newsletters at many of the events in which Sunrise participated.
  • Received a Sustainable Community Award from the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects. This award recognized Sunrise’s long-standing commitment to sustainable living.
  • Participated in Earth Day(s).
  • Participated in Conscious Community Network Sustainable Community Expo.
  • Hosted 12th Annual National Solar Tour. Fifty participants visited the Bently Biofeuls facility, the Job’s Peak Energy Star homes, and two private homes near Carson City.
  • Hosted 1st Annual Sustainable Community Tour. A small but enthusiastic crowd visited the renewable energy demonstration sites at Sierra Pacific in Reno, the Mountain View Montessori School, the D.R. Horton Energy Star homes, and a private home in north Reno.
  • Attended the ASES National Solar Energy Convention held from July 7th to 12th in Cleveland Ohio.
  • Distributed numerous copies of the Regional Green Building and Living Resource Guide to schools, organizations, and individuals.

2006

  • Sponsored the development of the Regional Green Building and Living Resource Guide (copies of the guide are available free to Sunrise members).
  • Sponsored and participated in the American Institute of Architects Sustainable Development Assessment Project for the Reno/Tahoe/Carson City area.
  • Sponsored and participated in the second annual Smart Living Expo held at Truckee Meadows Community College.
  • Sponsored the 11th Annual Northern Nevada Solar Home Tour, an American Solar Energy Society (ASES) event.  Over 100 participants viewed homes, a business, and a Green Power School in northwest Reno and Verdi.
  • Attended the ASES National Solar Energy Conference in Denver, Colorado, July 10-18th.

2005

  • Sponsored and participated in the first annual Smart & Sustainable Living Expo, held at University of Nevada Reno.   Attended by 50 vendors and 300 attendees.
  • Sponsored the 10th Annual Northern Nevada Solar Home Tour.

2004

  • Co-sponsored the 9th Annual Solar Home Tour with ASES and Nevada Million Solar Roofs, held at Desert Research Institute.
  • Attended the ASES National Solar Energy Conference in Portland, Oregon, July 9-14th.

2003

  • Sponsored production of "The Potential Economic Impact of Nevada's Renewable Energy Resources" by Center for Business and Economic Research UNLV.
  • Study given to every NV legislator.
  • Co-sponsored Legislative luncheon and renewable energy/sustainability exhibit at Legislature building.
  • Hosted Dr. Patrick Herron while receiving inaugural REACH Award from the Nevada Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Task Force.
  • Dr. Herron's programs saved Clark County School District $3,000,000 in fiscal year 2000-2001.
  • Sunrise members are working to promote renewable energy legislation in the 2003 Nevada State Legislature
  • Donated MoSES trailer to UNR

  • Hosted Sustainable Living Expo in Victorian Square- 3000+ attendees
  • Received grants from NV State Energy Dept; NV Renewable Energy Task Force; PLAN
  • Sponsored 7th Annual ASES Solar Home Tour

2001

  • Sunrise members instrumental in passing SB372 NV Renewable Energy Portfolio Bill - the highest % standard in the nation.
  • Hosted booth at ASES 2001 in Washington D.C. to publicize ASES 2002 event.
  • Received grant from NV State Energy Office to help fund hosting of ASES 2002 Conference.
  • Sponsored 6th Annual ASES Solar Home Tour and Sustainability Expo in Minden

2000

  • Members volunteered at ASES Convention in Madison WI.
  • Hosted booth at GlobeEx Energy Convention in Las Vegas; displayed solar go-cart.
  • Hosted booth at Reno Earth Day Celebration; Sunrise member IPS powered the bands with renewable energy.
  • Contributed to Reno News & Review special edition on Sustainability.
  • Sponsored Fifth Annual ASES Solar Home Tour and Solar Expo (held at Patagonia), Reno.
  • Started permaculture demonstration garden at Paradise Park.

1999

  • Received William & Moya Lear Foundation and Bently Nevada grants for Solar Education in Schools Project, joint ventured with Ecosage, Inc. Held workshop at WNCC to build MoSES (mobile solar education trailer) & a solar powered Electrathon car.
  • Co-sponsored “Partnering with Nevada Industry for Energy Independence,” a Legislative education event.
  • Chosen to host American Solar Energy Society 2002 Conference to be held in Reno, NV.
  • Participated in Reno Earth Day celebrations; powered their bands with renewable energy.
  • 4th Annual ASES Solar Home Tour – extended to two days to include presentations and exhibits.

1998

  • Joint ventured with EcoSage to introduce SolarQuest Solar for Schools learning program to Nevada
  • Third Annual Summer Solstice Celebration.
  • Celebration of the completion of Betsy Gledhill’s Straw Bale Home.
  • Participated in Earth Day.
  • Sponsored “Net Metering and You” seminar.
  • Set up China Springs Youth Camp        Mile High Organic Garden.
  • Participated in monthly statewide “Energy Coalition” conference calls.
  • Third Annual ASES Solar Homes Tour. (300 – 400 attendees)
  • Co-sponsored (with CSTRR) “ Your Marketing Edge- Energy Efficiency and Solar in Building Construction” seminar, Las Vegas.
  • Co-sponsored “Energy Efficient Construction” seminar at Reno Home Show.
